Fangs are teeth that remind us of their shape that a person did not always eat soft and processed foods. And if these pointed teeth also protrude forward … It not only looks unattractive, but also indicates malocclusion. What is the reason and which method is better to choose in order to correct a flaw?

Protruding fangs
Speaking fangs: how to fix?
Why are teeth in the wrong position?
Three main reasons:
Mismatch in tooth size and jawbone.
Teeth can be large by nature, and the jaw bone is small. If the teeth do not have enough space in the row, they erupt, protruding forward or backward (in this case, those teeth that erupted earlier appear to be extended). If the place for a tooth is greatly narrowed, it may not grow completely (have insufficient crown height) or may not appear at all. Such a tooth, which is in its infancy, is called retined. It can be seen on a CT scan.
Fangs erupt at 9–12 years old. The later – the more likely they will be located incorrectly.
Malocclusion.
If the wrong bite has already formed at the time of eruption, then the teeth will tend to close properly, even if they are uneven relative to each other.
Early removal (or loss) of milk teeth.
If milk teeth are not properly cared for and caries are not healed, they may fall out ahead of time. The place in the row of teeth will be reduced, because in childhood all tissues are elastic, and teeth always tend to close if gaps appear. Permanent teeth may begin to erupt along an irregular path. Those with protruding fangs, the teeth themselves are often large. Therefore, after treatment, the orthodontist’s smile looks very attractive. The whole truth about first person braces! Teething fangs
Often fangs just don’t have enough space
When do fangs come forward?
This is one of the most common violations with which orthodontists work. It’s all about teething. The upper teeth, each of which has a serial number, appear as follows: 1st incisor, 2nd incisor, 1st premolar, canine. That is, the canine, which takes place near the lateral incisor, should grow in the space that remains after the eruption of the premolar. If there is not enough space, then the tooth cannot stand evenly.
- Teething procedure for permanent teeth
- Permanent upper teeth grow in that order.
How to fix the position of the teeth?
In childhood and adolescence, there is great potential for growth, including the jawbone. Therefore, in 10-12 years, removable orthodontic plates can help. By exerting constant pressure, they correct the position of the teeth. But with serious violations, when the fangs are located literally on top of the other teeth, only a fixed bracket system can help them fall into place.
Plate and Braces: Pros and Cons
Removable orthodontic plate | Fixed bracket system |
+ Inexpensive | – It costs more than a plate |
+ Easier to maintain hygiene | – To maintain good hygiene, control and motivation are needed |
– It has an impact constantly in only one direction, there is no way to customize individually | + The direction of exposure is set by the doctor individually for each patient and is constantly adjusted |
– Corrects only minor violations | + Very effective: corrects any malocclusion and tooth position |
– Works only while wearing | + Valid 24 hours a day |
– Children often uncontrollably remove plates and even lose | + Unable to withdraw before the end of treatment |
What problems arise due to canine dystopia?
Malocclusion
And all that follows from this: violation of the chewing process, accumulation of plaque in hard-to-reach places, and in the future – restrictions on the choice of prosthetics.
Ugly smile
Bulging fangs, narrowed upper jaw, pronounced “cheek corridors” (the space between the wall of the cheek and lateral teeth, which is visible with a smile). The more pronounced these violations, the more they distort the facial features – in some cases, the wrong bite is noticeable, even if you do not smile and do not talk.
Dystopia of the Fangs
In the picture, the doctor sees the position of all the teeth, even those that have been retarded (not erupted)
What to choose?
You can correct the violation with a removable plate (in childhood), removable burls or braces . The more serious the violation, the more likely the doctor will recommend braces. Indeed, in complex cases, it is they that work as efficiently as possible:
- At each appointment (every 4-6 weeks), the doctor adjusts the direction and strength of the exposure, based on the initial pathology and the result that was achieved earlier.
- If the height of the fangs is insufficient, after preparing a place in the dentition, the arch of the braces will “pull” the tooth out of the gums, in other words, make it grow. It is possible at any age.
- Expanding the dentition, the arch forms the correct shape of the upper jaw, makes the smile wider, open, bringing it closer to the ideal.
Or maybe it’s easier to remove?
Sometimes, to correct a bite, one has to remove healthy teeth, and most often such a sentence is received by fangs. But if you can do without removal (in most cases you can), of course, it is better to keep all the teeth: they are important for chewing, and for supporting the soft tissues of the face.
At present, there are no unsolvable problems for the orthodontist: combining the effects of braces and various auxiliary devices, the doctor can correct any shortcoming. With us, treatment is simple, convenient and affordable. To find out all about the and make an appointment, call us.
